Artist Statement: This series of seven ornaments was inspired by a collection of prayers known at The Great O Antiphons. Dating back to the ninth century, each prayer begins by addressing God using a First Testament title and concludes with a petition of longing for the coming of the Messiah. In liturgical use, the antiphons were associated with Evening Prayer worship during the Advent season when they were chanted, one each evening, from December 17 to 23.
The Great O Antiphons are most familiar to us in the beloved Advent hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” The relevance and poignancy of both the prayers and the hymn resonate with the longings of my heart, drawing me into a deep and prayerful experience of each Advent season.
The ornaments are titled SAPIENTIA (Wisdom), ADONAI (Lord of All), RADIX JESSE (Branch of Jesse), CLAVIS DAVID (Key of David), ORIENS (Rising Dawn), REX GENTIUM (Ruler of the Nations), EMMANUEL (God with Us).
