Curator's Statement

“All who are skillful among you shall come and make all that the Lord has commanded” (Exodus 35:10)

“The mission of the Episcopal Church and Visual Arts is to encourage artists and organizations to engage the visual arts in the spiritual life of the church. ECVA values the significance of faith, and encourages those who are engaged in using the visual arts in spiritual life.”

Jeanne WeaverBeing creative through the arts is a gift given to each of us by God to channel in some way to make our world a better place. Our gifts are a blessing from God and a way to engage in worship. Let us always remember to use our gifts wisely to the Glory of God.

In this exhibit of artworks we can see just how powerful God’s gifts can be. Twenty-eight ECVA artists are represented in one hundred seventy-six artworks in the forms of two dimension, multi-media, iconography, textile, photography, sculpture, assemblage and tesserae decorative art.

The call went out to create five to seven works in a cohesive series. The response was overwhelming. Many created more than one series. Due to the number of works involved it was my decision as curator to put a limit to the exhibit - to allow only one entry per artist and to limit the number of artists who participated. Although the works of some entries were not included, we thank you for your entry and look forward to seeing your works in a later exhibit.

Inspiration and passion are essential in creating a powerful series. Time and energy are spent to successfully communicate that passion to the viewer. As Robert Henri wrote in his book, The Art Spirit, “Art is the giving by each man of his evidence to the world. Those who wish to give, love to give, discover the pleasure of giving. Those who give are tremendously strong.”

In this exhibit, you will find twenty-eight cohesive bodies of work which contain common threads to connect them through palette, size, shape, composition, theme or subject matter.

I would like to thank all artists for your entries. I would also like to thank ECVA for allowing me the privilege to curate this exhibit. Last but definitely not least, I thank John Rollins, our webmaster, who worked with me in such a keen and thoughtful manner to put this exhibit on line.

Congratulations to all.

Sincerely,

Jeanne Harris Weaver
