Artist Statement: Spurred back into acrylic mixed media after attending ECVA’s The Power In Creating a Series with Jeanne Harris Weaver, I was bound and determined to create the series - despite the hurdles life has set before me this past year, no matter the outcome.
Leaf Skeleton Series. I am fascinated with leaves. As stamps, masks, and appliqués, leaves find their way onto many of my paintings. God speaks to me through their veins, margins, and intricate patterns.
The series here represents my first exploration of leaf skeletons. I had been collecting these lacey leaf remnants while engaged the removal of invasive plant species. I enjoy exploring the relationships among visual art elements–such as, color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value. Especially texture.
Bio: I’ve spent much of my working career applying digital media and visual arts to practical problems - as graphic designer for paying clients and as pro bono designer for children’s advocacy and church organizations. The biggest hurdle has been in creating art I do for myself. My Bachelor of Fine Arts fueled my working career. My experiences as a foster parent and as a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) led me back to school and a PhD in Child and Family Studies. I am a grandmother of six (the youngest of whom is currently living with us). I am a musician (percussion/mallets) and a gardener trying to return two acres of invasives back to a native wildlife refuge.
In my personal art, I work primarily with acrylics, seashells, rocks, and found objects. Acrylics are a delightfully diverse medium. Utilizing glazes, mediums, and modeling paste facilitates divergent textures, dimensions, and color shifts. Blot, wipe, scrunch, splatter.
