"O Lord God
Almighty, as you have taught us to call
the evening, the morning, and the
noonday one day; and have made the sun
to know its going down: Dispel the
darkness of our hearts, that by your
brightness we may know you to be the
true God and eternal light, living and
reigning for ever and ever. Amen."
(Prayer for Light from An Order of
Worship for the Evening, BCP page 110.)
This image is a symbol of The Daily
Office meant to reveal the rhythmic flow
of each day through the hours, each part
of the day having its own theme and
character of eternal light. Similarly
developed the themes and tones of the
hourly prayers. From golden morning
hours, to nature's "ordinary" green
noonday, to evening's long and intense
mauve rays, to nighttime's deep blue
blanket, the beauty of one day is
startling. Symmetry depicts the
faithfulness of God. While light changes
with the seasons and weather, the days
remain dependable, for God has made the
sun to know its going down. This
shimmering world of time and light
belongs to God and is a gift to us; we
honor this reality when we pray the
hours.
