Chuck Kirchner

Grandeur

Photograph

Artist Statement: Nature wins. The winds blow, the sands shift, dunes grow and move and shift, mountains erode and volcanoes build up. Our world is fragile, especially the living beings whether human, or flora or fauna. Our treatment of the earth, our home, is often appalling, other times beneficial, but nature continues onward. This photograph of the dunes at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico reminds me of the immensity of the natural world. Yes, it's fragile; yes, human begins greatly impact it. But stepping back for a moment and realizing the grandeur of this world and how small we physically are in comparison just moves me to lessen my footprint and support this fragile earth.

Bio: Chuck Kirchner is a photographer and workshop leader based in Tucson, Arizona (having recently relocated from Bainbridge Island, Washington). His subjects include rituals, dance, spirituality, and world cultures. The range of photographs represents the spirit of the places Chuck has had the privilege of visiting over the years and the people met along the way. The challenge for the photographer is to convey the emotional sense of being there - from serene and solemn to sensual and exuberant. Chuck’s photographs have the ability to capture the season, the sensations, the memories and, most importantly, the spirit of place and of life. The tools of the trade involve technical acumen, artistic vision, patience, good timing, and, of course, a bit (or lot) of serendipity.
