Harmony Among the Daughters of
Abraham
Mixed-media
(kaleidoscopic photographs, rayon thread, beads.)
The hexagon
and the six-pointed star that fits within it have long been associated
with Judaism, as the cross and the square enclosing it are identified with
Christianity. In the elaborate visual conventions of Islam, the number
three and therefore the triangle are symbolic of the Knower (God), the
Known (humankind), and the Act of Knowing. Each of these three archetypal
shapes can tile a plane by itself, and they can also tile a plane
together, giving the combination a particular harmony, so I have used them
to represent the three Abrahamic traditions.
To signify
the way these faiths have a common origin, but have developed their own
characters and differences, the patterns in all the tiles are made from a
single original photograph, of a field of grass. They fit together in a
harmonious pattern, conveying hope that understanding of our common roots
can bring about peace and respect.
