Caroline Coolidge Brown

Valley of Dry Bones

acrylic and collage assemblage on board with x-ray, book pages, wood and screws

Artist Statement: The body has the miraculous power to heal, whether it is tissue, muscle or bone that needs to mend. The text beneath the x-ray tells the story of the Valley of Dry Bones in the Biblical Book of Ezekiel; the breath of God restores life into the lifeless forms, a miracle that makes the dry bones dance. Pulsing with vibrant colors, the piece reminds me that our bodies must experience seasons of brokenness and ache alongside seasons of blossoming and healing.

This piece was made for and accepted into a juried show called “The Body Beautiful” at Ciel Gallery in Charlotte, NC.

bio: Caroline Coolidge Brown layers patterns, images, text and color in her artwork. For her, all materials are fair game as she combines monoprints, linoleum blocks, acrylic paints, chalk and found papers. Thanks to a 2015 grant from the Charlotte Arts and Science Council, she purchased her own press and is now exploring different types of printmaking, and the new possibilities for creative combinations.

Caroline is a popular retreat leader and offers workshops in visual journaling, watercolor travel journaling, printmaking and mixed media painting.

Caroline’s family includes two wonderful daughters in college and one happy Bishop Elect, the Reverend Kevin Brown. Though sad to be leaving her North Carolina friends, she is thrilled to see what God has in store for her family and her art in the Diocese of Delaware.
