Artist Statement: Pieta-the Suffering symbolizes a mother’s greatest loss, that of her child, here depicted as Mary and Jesus. No mother should ever have to bear this but many are forced to including my own grandmother.

Bio: Janet McKenzie’s art is regularly carried in demonstrations across the country in support of racial justice, gender equality and the rights of the LGBTQ community. The late Sr. Wendy Beckett selected her painting, Jesus of the People, First Place winner of The National Catholic Reporter’s global competition Jesus 2000. Revealed on the Today Show her dark interpretation of Christ (modeled by a woman) received fierce opposition.
