Mary, Mother of Captives |
Artist Statement: The suffering of Jesus is obvious. Macho men scourged Him and mocked Him and spit on Him. Pilate said "behold the man". It didn't make any difference. Mary suffers too, more mentally that physically. The handcuffs show her identity with people of today who can be captives of violence, drugs, anger, political oppression and unimaginable memories. Bio: Jack Pachuta is a contemporary iconographer, who has been painting icons for over 25 years. His icons are inspired by medieval Russian icons, Slavic folk art icons and Romanesque frescoes. The icons are displayed in Roman Catholic, Byzantine Rite Catholic, Episcopalian and Lutheran places of worship: churches, chapels, shrines, retreat centers and seminaries. They are in the collections of many bishops, priests, deacons, nuns, prison chaplains, laity, friends and relatives. Hundreds of thousands of prayers cards and bookmakers have been made from his icons and used in prison ministry from Sing Sing to San Quentin. Donating prayer cards is Jack's primary way of using his talents to serve God. |
