Seeking & Serving Christ in All Persons...
Clergy Stole celebrating
the 30th anniversary
of the Ordination of The Rt. Rev. Thomas Ely,
Bishop of Vermont
The stole, commissioned by Bishop Ely's family, honors his lifetime of
work, perfectly expressed in the 'Call' for this exhibition. The yellow
banner says in full,
"Pray the prayer of Christ, Seek the mind of Christ, Do the deeds of
Christ." Above it is Camel's Hump mountain with a full moon (actually a
golf-ball)
representing not only the bishop's recreational interest but also his
founding of the Hastings Open, an annual event in the Diocese of CT which
has raised
significant funds to support ministries in that diocese. On the other
side (his right) a rainbow symbolizes Bishop Ely's work in support of GLBT
persons and their inclusion within the church as well as environmental
ministries. The children, based on photographs taken by the bishop in San
Pablo
and Anyidi, represent his interest in the welfare children throughout the world. The
cross at the bottom of the right sits on a piece of hand-woven African
mud-cloth.
Excepting the mud-cloth, the stole was made from silks using a variety of
techniques - 2010. It has been an honor to design and make this tribute,
recognizing the gifts of such an exceptional man.
