Imago Dei
is Latin for the
expression meaning that human beings are created in the Image of God. Therefore it
is a form of desecration to harm another human, which is what I wanted to
explore with this work. The circle is meant to signify the state of
wholeness in which God made us.
As a
continuation of that theme, I created another circle quilt, Imago Dei
II-Peacemakers. In the center, I made one circle quilt of Christ
himself, based on a icon of Jesus Pantocrator at St. Catherine’s
Monastery. Then, I made nine other quilts, these depicting various
humanitarians of our age who have made significant contributions to
furthering peace. These nine quilts surround the image of Christ, in the
manner of petals extending from a flower, in accord with Jesus’s prayer” …
that we all may be one.” I chose them because they lived in service to
others by breaking down the divisions among the human family. The nine
figures I chose were Kathe Kollwitz, Rigoberta Menchu, Shirin Ebadi,
Maximilian Kolbe, Sok-Hon Ham, Mahatma Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln, Mother
Teresa, and Nelson Mandela.
