Agnes Knitting the Nations
Together in Peace
Life-Size Fiber Sculpture
I awoke early one morning with a
dream image clearly impressed on my heart and mind. A beautiful wise
old woman was sitting peacefully and comfortably. Her hands were
utterly relaxed as she knitted with lightning quick stitches, as she
knitted the nations of the world together. She looked up at me,
calmly, as if to ask, “won’t you join me in this work?”
That very day I began to create Agnes, a life size fiber sculpture.
Her bones are PVC pipe, her muscles are foam “noodles.” She is made
of wire and batting and fabric and yarn and wood and leather and
clay and paint and old jewelry.
Different crafts and different media come together, as the nations
she is knitting come together. And she looks up at the viewer to
ask: “Won’t you join me in knitting the nations together?”
