Curator's Statement
Photography allows us
to reflect upon and re-present (in some imperfect, yet informative,
way) a larger image of the depth and breadth of life in all its
complexities. Photographs can come from the creation around us; from
our intersections with one another; through our yearnings for vision
and meaning; when we embrace the fullness of life; in our
imaginations fueled by light, darkness, color, and characters — and
from so many of the directions in which our hearts and minds take
us.
In their diversity, the images selected for this exhibit demonstrate
the various ways in which we might engage life — the places where
the past and future touch the present, and in so doing, spark a
deeper conversation about their wide meaning.
We observers of these
photographers are allowed to discern the deeper meanings beyond
titles, locations, and dates. I trust that as we observe this
exhibition, we will be led to other meeting grounds of imagination,
memory, and wonderment. As is often stated: a picture is worth a
thousand words. So is the promise within each of these images.
We are invited on a quest to explore life as we live it —a life
which we yearn to explore. I hope that while we celebrate the work
of these photographers, we might birth within us a love of the
photographic journey, as we find the hope and promise that Advent
brings to us, and to the world, yet again.
