Soul of the City

Artist Statement: What can be more liberating and life-giving than to join a second line in the streets of New Orleans? The heart beat of the city can be felt as you follow behind the jazz band and dance through the streets. This painting depicts the unique way that the people of St. Anna’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans celebrate being a part of the Jesus Movement as they second line through the streets of New Orleans on Palm Sunday.

Bio: I came into the world of art through dance. I have taken what I learned from the study of dance and choreography and have applied it to my paintings. I enjoy painting landscapes, especially scenes from France, where I once studied, and scenes from New Orleans, which is near my home.

In the church, I have used my training as a spiritual director and as a diocesan worship leader to lead workshops and quiet days on art and spirituality. For me, painting in oils is another way to pray.

I have recently shown my work in a solo show at a local college and my work is now in several galleries in South Mississippi and Louisiana.
