Calm Heart

Mixed media collage: acrylic, paper, and leaves 4' x 6"

Artist Statement: To me, this shows how God's love, so imbued in trees, can both open and calm my heart. Even if my heart is pierced with sorrow or in the turmoil of violent feelings and thoughts, contemplating the quiet wisdom and full aliveness of a tree, or even the beauty of a single leaf, can restore my soul.

I live and paint in the woods, where trees nourish my growing art ministry. When I'm openhearted -- open to God's awesome love -- the entire woods seems to glow. I experience the trees perceiving me in their own mysterious way: "looking back at me." Then the whole world comes more alive to me, and I can participate in the divine play of making art. More than an artist, though, I'm an adventurer with God.

Bio: Catherine Jo Morgan lives and paints in a tiny cabin she helped build years ago, in the woods of northeast Georgia. Before dedicating herself to painting hearts, she had a city career designing and leading groups and workshops, then a career as an artist-blacksmith. She's a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and has worked for civil rights both in Chicago and in the Southeast.
