St. Stephen's Cloak
pen and ink on rag board
30 x 40 inches

Stephen's Cloak represents the garment the saint might have worn as he was stoned by the crowd enraged by his words proclaiming God in Christ. The garment is "woven" with the colors of God's covenant to Noah in the rainbow after the flood. The stones of attack and death tumble down around Stephen; the blood of his wounds edges from beneath the cloak. The tongues of fire and the dove of the Holy Spirit descend upon the saint and the wings of his spirit ascend.

Stephen proclaimed "the Good News of God in Christ by word and example."  His story is a vivid expression of the words of that The Rev. Mark Bozzuti-Jones shares in his call for entries:  we are invited "to live, to speak, to dance, to forgive, to laugh, to cry, to heal, to love, to struggle, to share, to have faith, to die, to rise, to proclaim... to live with meaning."
