Theotokos
Spray paint on plywood
42 x 48 inches

The second person of the Trinity, whom the universe could not contain, grew within the womb of the Theotokos, the God-bearer, as she is referred to in the Orthodox Church. Here, Mary is depicted holding a globe topped with the cross (or globus cruciger) which was a symbol of power in the Roman Empire.

Here it is painted blue to represent the globe topped by the cross, not to signify power belonging to Mary but the concern for and authority over the earth that belonged to her child, Jesus. Common paint and wood transformed to an image of the Virgin Mary who was herself quite ordinary, but transformed by her faith in, and obedience to, God.
