Lady of Guadelupe

The story of our Lady of Guadelupe begins with a vision given to a humble peasant, Juan Diego. The Virgin asked him to build a shrine for her at the former site of a temple to the corn goddess, Tonantzin. The religious authorities, doubting the vision, asked for some proof. This was given when Juan Diego gathered roses in the midst of winter snows at the Virgin’s request. When Juan returned to the authorities and opened up his serape, the roses fell out and the image of the Lady of Guadelupe appeared on the serape. Still preserved in Mexico, the image attracts people from all over Mexico and the world.
