Light of the World

The People Who Sat in Darkness Have Seen A Great Light
by Barbara Mitchell

Medium: Fiber Art
Date/Size: 2008 / 24" by 32"

This piece was inspired by an account of spelunking in a sermon given by The Rev. Sara-Scott Wingo. She spoke of looking for light from the dark interior of a cave. This seems to parallel our Advent journey as we anticipate the coming of Christ. Though at times it seems our lives are lived in darkness and uncertainty, we recognize that the Divine Light is always with us. I chose to represent this struggle with fabric and quilting.

I am a fiber artist who uses all types of fabric and fiber to illustrate the beauty of the created world, as well as the complexity of the interior world. The textures of fabric and fiber continue to inspire my work. I create wall hangings, landscapes, liturgical banners, and clergy stoles for individuals and religious groups.
