Crown of Thorns

Watercolor and Colored pencil on paper

The Roman soldiers who crown Jesus with thorns are bullies. Heaping on verbal, physical, and spiritual abuse, bullies attack the soul.

This painting emerged from my own soul while on spiritual retreat in the Sonoran Desert. In a major life transition, my inner bullies, voices, and fears from past experiences of emotional and spiritual abuse, returned to taunt and tempt me to doubt myself and back away from a call to be a spiritual director. In an emotional as well as a literal desert, I walked into the low hanging branch of a cactus, embedding its spines in my forehead...a crown of thorns.

In this shared experience of undeserved suffering, I felt a deep bond with Jesus my brother. Together we won the battle. I am now a spiritual director. I also handle bullies rather well.
