Hail Mary

36 by 24 inches

Oil on canvas

The reference for this painting is an alcove in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  Banks of prayer candles sit before a statue of Mary holding the infant Jesus, which is backlit by the setting sun pouring through a stained glass window.  This image reminds
me that art, for some, can be a tool to draw the viewer into prayer and contemplation.

As a Christian artist, this underscores to me that my responsibility in creating art is to God alone.  I must strive to seek the presence of God in the creation of my own artwork, so that maybe, if the Holy Spirit chooses, the viewer of my art might be drawn closer to The Divine.
