Veils Thinning
82 by 88.5 inches
Acrylic on primed Belgium linen

In this painting figures stand, sit, or lie and wait—they wait self-absorbed not living with Christ. This is a life-size painting that I created following the death of my mother.

“Thinning veils” refers to the amazing journey I took with her as she approached her physical death.  I witnessed her transformation from bitterness and self-absorption, to a pure loving soul.  That experience made me want more of that thinned veiled experience—when one sees God’s mystery.

Her death was just a few days after I turned 50 years old, and the experience brought me back to the church:  I was a Baptist through my childhood and youth, when I returned to the church I became an Episcopalian.  The nudity in this painting (I am a university professor teaching painting and life drawing) seemed necessary to represent souls and our vulnerability in our relationship with God.
