Spirit of Fire
Acrylic on paper

This painting was inspired by two stylistically very different chants, medieval mystic, Hildegard of Bingen's The Origin of Fire: The Fiery Spirit, and Navajo/Apache musician, Perry Silverbird's Spirit of Fire. Of the Spirit that dwells in all, Hildegard said "I the fiery life of divine wisdom, I ignite the beauty of the plains, I sparkle the waters, I burn in the sun, and the moon, and the stars."

Her vision and words sounding uncannily in sync with Native American spirituality, led me to Native American chant and dance.

I have envisioned the Holy Spirit as a fiery bird in the full-feathered regalia of a Native American dancer, moving in the characteristic spiral of the galaxies, dancing the cosmos into  being.

Albums:  Anonymous 4, The Origin of Fire: Music and Visions of Hildegard of Bingen; Perry Silverbird, Spirit of Fire: Native American Chanting
