St Gregory the Great
Monastic and Bishop of Rome

Egg tempera

This icon is inspired by an illumination from the 12th century French manuscript, “Lettres de St. Gregoire.”

Following the example of the One “who came not to be served but to serve”, St Gregory  took as his papal title “servus servorum Dei” (servant of the servants of God).  I wrote this icon to honor St Gregory and the Brothers of St Gregory, a contemporary Episcopal order (www.gregorians.org) that seeks to serve in this same spirit.

“When we attend to the needs of those in want, we give them what is theirs, not ours. More than performing works of mercy, we are paying a debt of justice.” – St Gregory the Great +604
