Fish Eyes
Acrylic on canvas

Revealing its image in a dream twenty years ago, the ‘fish eye’ has surfaced many times in the artist’s work. Although its meaning remains a mystery—as simultaneously neither eye, nor fish, nor extant creature, nor literal symbol—it yet evokes a knowingness, a Christ-consciousness. Its varying iteration in this painting summons both the communication of its constituents as well as their prior creation, much like early Christians revealed themselves in counterpart, one drawing a fish, and the knowing other adding the eye.

"Fish Eyes" is one of a series of paintings and drawings exploring this image and its meaning through re-creation and transformation.
