Multifaceted
Gold, glass, and clay mosaic tesseraie (pieces)

“Multifaceted” is executed in gold, glass, and clay mosaic tesserae (or “pieces”) to present the Christian Cross—communal symbol of our faith. Begun by fitting the Cross’s central tesserae, the 24- by 24- inches image came alive as I made room side-by-side for more tesserae as they presented themselves.

Some tesserae are wrinkled and textured, some mirror-smooth. Some are hand-cut, some handmade. Some fit straightly, some not. Some show color, others black or white. Metallic gold reflects color while the vivid color quickens the gold. All are grounded amid humbling earthen-hued grout.

As if called by name, each tessera was hand selected and placed. Each has a place, a role, a home. Imaging Ubuntu, each piece has identity yet adds up to, enlivens, and enriches something larger, more powerful in community than singly. Each piece, like us, was created of differing gifts, shapes, colors, sizes. Yet each is equally graced with its place in the fuller creation story, in the Cross. Each has a precious identity and mission. We too are called to choose to shape ourselves, to step into our role as witnesses and builders of the Church and Community. And with hope we aspire to welcome and be welcomed into a fitting space in the mansion with many rooms made possible by this Cross, this Faith.

This glistening mosaic image, “Multifaceted,” reflects our many roles and callings in the church and world, both as individuals and as a faith community.
