Celestina Asleep in the Colors
Acrylic on Canvas 24 by 36 inches

Many worlds intersect on the streets of Antigua, Guatemala. Manual-laborers hustle to and from their jobs. Teachers and salespeople step off buses and walk to their workplaces. Wealthy families from Guatemala City stroll and shop. Language students of all ages from around the world walk in groups, speaking a myriad of languages. Tourists explore hidden nooks and crannies. And, wherever the students and tourists are, street vendors follow, hawking their wares.

One chilly afternoon, in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the street, the blowing of truck horns and the ringing of church bells, a street vendor named Ana laid her three-year-old baby girl, Celestina, to sleep in the colors of her tiny street-side shop. And Celestina slept soundly, peacefully, at ease in the mess and noise and crashing differences of the world around her.

Would that we could all be so at ease, so comfortable, in the rollicking, rowdy family of humanity!
